Art Therapy Course: Rooted in Ease

I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor, Canadian Certified Counsellor and Registered Canadian Art Therapist practicing on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples (in “Vancouver”). I’m a child of first generation immigrants from the Nakhi/Naxi ancestry (ethnic minority) of China and the founder of Decipher Counselling Art Therapy Studio. Welcome!

Since 2018, I have been working in private practice with individuals, couples and families seeking to heal from complex PTSD and trauma — whether personal, interpersonal, generational, and cultural — as well as folks navigating anxiety, identity exploration (including racial and gender identity), disordered eating, and complex family dynamics.

A bit about me…

As an adolescent, I really struggled with my mental health and bicultural expectations. But I didn’t have the language to describe what I was experiencing. I didn’t have access and knowledge to mental health resources growing up in my environment so setting boundaries was difficult.

In my work, I recognize how powerful it can be to learn our body’s cues so we’re not so hard on ourselves. I support folks in noticing the difference between thinking about our feelings and truly feeling them. At the same time, I acknowledge the very real barriers that racialized and intentionally excluded communities face in accessing care that reflects and honours their intersecting identities.

I aim to create a space where people of all intersectionalities can feel like they belong. To feel like they can be themselves in their most unique ways. Where their stories will be heard and held.

How can I help you?

Some approaches that inform how I work are pulling from Narrative therapy, Queer theory, Intersectional Feminism (Kimberlé Crenshaw and bell hook’s work), parts work, Resistance-Informed practice (Vikki Reynolds), Somatic Abolitionism and trauma-informed therapies especially from racialized educators (Black Futurism, EMDR, Resmaa Menakem, Natalie Y. Gutiérrez), Tara Brach and Kristen Neff’s work on self-compassion, Jungian approach in Art Therapy, and Health At Every Size.

It’s different for everyone. And it really depends on what you’re personally looking for and also how we work together during our time. But I’m very person-centered, and I’ll always prioritize how you’re feeling and work with the human fact that we all change. And what you want might change over the course of our time together.

Fun fact

I live with my two dogs, like to play pretend my place is a little vegan café, art journal, and manage a mild wheat intolerance.
