Annie Kao
A bit about me
I’m Annie (she/her), a pre-RCC licensed counsellor with a Master of Counselling degree from City University. I am a first-generation Taiwanese Canadian and grew up between Taipei, Tongva territory (so-called Los Angeles), and the unceded Coast Salish lands now called Vancouver. Before becoming a counsellor, I spent over a decade in the corporate world building a career in strategic sourcing. My lived experiences during my early years of parenthood became the catalyst for my healing journey, reshaping my sense of purpose. This inspired me to slow down and pursue a career where I can make meaningful connections with people.
What is it like working with me?
I work from a person centred, trauma informed approach that is grounded in cultural sensitivity. Integrating various modalities to best support each individual's unique needs can allow us to create a personalized experience in session. I often ask reflective questions and gently guide clients to notice and expand beyond their stuckness.
As we explore cultural nuances and personal narratives, we also make space for the in-betweens—where new insights and possibilities can emerge. I also help bring attention to the parts that show up as we learn to sit and understand these feelings (emotionally and somatically) and see where they might lead us. Modalities I often draw from include Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Somatic Therapy (helping you connect to body's cues), and Internal Family Systems (parts work).
How can I help?
I specialize in working with folks from BIPOC and LGBTQIA2S+ communities looking for an affirming space to explore their identities, navigate relationships and personal challenges. I work with young couples navigating communication and their desire to connect. Much of my work is rooted in inner- wisdom, compassion and expansion, where I hold space for growth and change that is not prescribed, but co-created.
Fun Facts
I am a parent to a vibrant child and a cat mom. In my spare time, I like to connect with different parts of myself by making pottery on the wheel, engaging in physical activities, and travelling. As a serial hobbyist, I’m open to try new things and learn more about myself along the way."
